The E Drum was inspired by the gyrosphere and was designed to provide audiences with an extraordinary experience unlike anything they've seen before. The design process involved multiple platforms working in harmony to create a new machine, a new stage, and a new way of thinking for the drummer. This innovative approach also inspired musicians to compose music in a whole new light.
One of the unique features of the E Drum is its modularity. It can be wheeled on stage as a new act and can be easily disassembled for transportation. The stage is 115cm R, 60cm high and consists of three rings. Each of the 19 drums has a RGB pixel controlled Neon Flex tube around it, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle.
The design was realized using WYSIWYG lighting design software. The team tested the space with a drummer to get notes and developed the software side using Abelton Live for music and MIDI triggers and GMA2 for lights. The lighting in this project was designed to imitate music through various methods in light design, creating a visual material that is as integral to the performance as the music itself.
One of the major challenges faced by the design team was connecting the lighting and sound together and finding a balance between the needs of the human drummer and the needs of making a grand visual show. The team also had to ensure that the installation was safe, comfortable, and easy to transport and assemble.
The E Drum is more than just a drum show; it's an interactive platform that uses MIDI as its technical language. When the drummer plays, they trigger MIDI notes that can be transformed into lighting cues, video cues, or any other actions. This design has opened up new possibilities in the entertainment industry, allowing each new production to create their own unique show.
In conclusion, Idan Herbet's E Drum is a groundbreaking design that has revolutionized drum shows. It's a testament to the power of creativity, innovation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. It's not just a drum show; it's an extraordinary experience.
